Christmas Performances (December 2009)

On Tuesday 15 December families and friends enjoyed performances by all our children in our school's Christmas production. Each class performed their own play - Class 1 "The Raggedy King", Class 2 "The Flower of Holy Night" and Class 3 "Tiny Tim's Christmas Carol". This year, for the first time, there was a change of venue as we were given the opportunity to use the Pennine Manor Hotel, which meant that we were able to seat a larger audience more comfortably. If you would like to see a selection of photos taken during the day please click on the pictures below.

Class 1
The children performed brilliantly and we had lots of comments from parents and grandparents saying how much they had enjoyed the performances.

At each performance a collection was taken and we were delighted to have raised £168.14 for the homeless charity Shelter.

FOSS also raised £224.60 from the raffle.

Lepra Fundraising (October 2009)

This year, for our autumn charity event, our school supported the work of Lepra.

Brenda Coslett, a representative from Lepra, came to school to talk to our pupils about the work of the charity, and how they could help people around the world afflicted with leprosy. The children then collected sponsors and each class took part in a fun workout with Brenda.

We were all amazed to have raised a magnificent £747.81, which we were told was enough money to help cure 35 children of leprosy. Well done to all the children and their families!

KPMG Volunteers (August 2009)

Earlier this year we were approached by an employee of the accountancy firm KPMG, offering to bring a team of volunteers to work at our school on a project of our choosing, and we opted to ask for help in developing our outdoor area. The wooded area at the side of the school field was in need of serious pruning/thinning out to make it more accessible for children to use in outdoor lessons etc. During the summer holiday, in August, around 60 employees of KPMG from their Manchester and Leeds offices came to school and spent the morning sawing, chopping, pruning, digging, hoeing and generally tidying up.

All the hardworking volunteers carried out their tasks willingly and with good humour, and due to their fantastic efforts we now have an area which we can further develop for curriculum activities.

Leavers' Disco (July 2009)

Year 6 Oscars party
In the last week of term a group of parents organised a disco for the Year 6 pupils who were leaving our school in July. The evening had an "Oscars" theme, and all the children in school were invited to attend.

Year 6 children travelled in style and arrived in a limousine. Everyone joined in with the theme of the night, and there were tuxedos, posh frocks and children in fancy dress. The children were treated to popcorn, "champagne", and a chocolate fountain, and the leavers were presented with their own 'Oscar' statuettes.

Everyone agreed it was a brilliant evening, and thanked Mrs Lodge, who was the main organiser of the event.

World Book Day (March 2009)

Ben Ruddlesden, a Bibliotherapist working for Kirklees, was invited to spend the morning at our school on 5 March, World Book Day. He worked in all three classes using the theme of 'Bullying'. He read all the children stories and engaged children in a range of practical activities, including a 'tug of war', 'putting bad ideas down the toilet' and hand printing with the younger children. The children learned about working together and how to deal with bullying and bullies.

Some children came to school dressed as their favourite storybook character and prizes were given for the best costume in each class.

Red Nose Day (March 2009)

Along with schools all over the country, our school joined in the fundraising for Comic Relief.

We had a non uniform day and parents
and staff were entertained by the children in the afternoon with music, jokes and dancing. The staff also performed "There's a Hole in My Bucket" which ended up with Mr Shilton getting wet (again!).

We were all very pleased to have raised £200.13 for the charity.

Christmas Performances (December 2008)

On Tuesday 16 December parents and friends were treated to two performances of Christmas plays. Classes 1 and 2 performed "A Dancing Christmas Party" and Class 3 performed their version of "Oliver Twist". From a collection taken during the day we were delighted to have raised £163.97 to be shared between Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child and the Forget Me Not Trust. FOSS also raised £192.40 from selling raffle tickets and serving refreshments.

Class 3 Trip to Colne Valley Museum (November 2008)

On 26 November children in Class 3 were invited to the Colne Valley Museum in Golcar to demonstrate the use of a living museum to other teachers. Everyone wore Victorian costume and experienced how children lived in the latter part of the 19th century in the Colne Valley. The visit was funded by Museums, Libraries & Archives Yorkshire Ltd.

During the day children helped to clean, polish brass, iron, do the laundry, bake bread and scones (and their own butter), spin wool, weave, make corn dollies, learn about how clogs were made, and prepare vegetable soup to eat at lunchtime.

It was a very busy day, but thoroughly enjoyed by all the children and staff.

Samaritan's Purse - Operation Christmas Child (October 2008)

In October, for our autumn term charity appeal, our children and their families helped the Samaritan's Purse - "Operation Christmas Child" charity, by making up shoe boxes filled with toys, toiletries, stationery and sweets to be sent as gifts to children in hospitals, orphanages, displaced persons camps, homeless shelters and improverished neighbourhoods in various parts of the world. We also held a coffee morning to raise money to help cover the costs to the charity for the transport and organisation of the shoe boxes.

A big "thank you" to everyone who helped donate enough gifts to
fill 47 shoe boxes for the appeal. Each shoe box contained 'something to love' such as toys, hair accessories, 'something
to do' such as stationery, books etc, 'something to use' like toothpaste, soap etc and 'something to eat or wear' like sweets and gloves.

We also raised £98.90 towards transport costs.

Creative Heights IV "Two Wings" (July 2008)

On Tuesday 8 July children from Class 3 performed in our school's fourth joint arts venture with three local small schools - Clough Head, Wellhouse and Wilberlee (known as the "Heights Cluster").

Class 3 performing at the Lawrence Batley Theatre

Working with the Satellite Arts Group we chose the theme of birds as a vehicle for our drama, music and dance.

Each school produced an individual play from different cultures around the world - ours was based on the traditional Spanish folk story "Half Chick".

We joined with the other three schools for the singing of the English folk song "Magpie Song" and the traditional American song "Two Wings".

A great deal of hard work went into the very enjoyable production. Our children enjoyed the experience of performing to a large audience in the Lawrence Batley Theatre.

Honley Show Winners (June 2008)

Following on from our success at last year's Honley Show where we achieved a first prize for Class 3 and a third prize for Class 1, we once again submitted samples of our children's work.

This year we did even better - Class 1 won a first prize and Class 3 a second prize in their respective categories.

Class 1's "Growing Flowers" work won first prize
Class 1 designed and constructed their own "growing flowers" in a Technology lesson (for more examples please look at the 'Classes' page).
Class 3's butterflies won second prize

Class 3 made their butterfly models using recycled plastic bags and coat hangers.

Well done to all the children in Class 1 and Class 3!

Easter Activities (March 2008)

For the last few years children from each class have taken part in our decorated egg competition, and each year the ideas for decorating the eggs get more imaginative. This year was no exception and the results were amazing! Our very talented children had spent a lot of time at home painting, sticking and colouring, and among the exhibits shown below you might to able to spot chickens, rabbits, butterflies, a cat ogling a mouse, a turtle, a contestant from the 'eggs' factor and a Dalek ready to 'eggsterminate'!

Class 1 Easter eggs
Class 2 Easter eggs
Class 3 Easter eggs

Class One had their traditional egg rolling competition in the playground and there was also a visit from the Easter bunny in the afternoon (although once again he/she managed to leave chocolate eggs for the children without being seen!).
